Let’s take a look at the top trends for 2017 in search engine ranking and blogging!
Each year, Searchmetrics® does an annual study on Google’s® top search engine ranking factors. Indicators like bounce rate, click-through rate and time on site are considered the top ranking factors.
- Searchmetrics results show that the top three sites in 2016 have an average click-through rate of 36 percent.
- The average bounce rate, or number of visitors to a site who leave after only visiting one page, is 43 percent for the first page of SERPs (search engine results page).
- Average time on site for the top 10 sites is 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
The study also showed that content with 1,000 or more words ranked highest in search results. It also showed that queries with keywords in the title ranked in the top 53 percent of searches.
Top content is also including H1’s and H2’s. In fact, Searchmetrics recommends adding H2’s in page URLs.1
How To Use Search Engine Ranking Trends in 2017
In 2017, writers should continue to focus on capturing the hearts’ of readers. Trending in 2017 will be content that focuses on the “mind, heart and soul” of the user.2 Google is adapting algorithms that will shift focus to readers more so than traditional keyword research.
Another huge trend in 2017 is an increase in long-form content. High-quality content that boasts 2,000 to 4,000 words stands above other content and is more “shareable” on social media. It is important to remember that search does not come from search engines alone, but also from e-commerce and social platforms.
What Does This Mean for Bloggers?
Search engine ranking trends and blogging correlate. The average blog post takes about three hours to write. Evidence shows that the longer a post is and the longer it takes to write, the better results it gets. Average blog posts are more than 1,000 words, but posts that are more than 2,000 words have doubled in number.
In 2017, it will also be important to incorporate at least one video or image in all blog posts. Thirty-five percent of bloggers who reported strong results for their blogs included video. The use of industry influencers3 to drive traffic to your blog will also continue in importance in 2017.
