What’s your friend network?

out of the blue Heidi Strand March 28, 2008

Heidi StrandAs I’m the cynical, self-deprecating one on our team, my posts will be a tad … different.

As Brenda so eloquently wrote in her last post, we recently attended a PRSA seminar that focused on social networking.

Motivated, I returned to my page after a year of ignoring it. I also established a page on Facebook.

To my utter dismay I realized just how lacking I really am.

On my MySpace page, I had only three people contact me in a year’s time. Two of whom I knew and one I didn’t.

On my Facebook page, it was actually more depressing! Waiting to be my friend was my cousin, Emma. I absolutely adore Emma, so that wasn’t the issue and it was nice feeling wanted. But, Emma is about 12 and that made me realize just how challenging it will be for me to maintain and grow an online network. I don’t have the same time, inclination or ambition to share my (what I now realize) boring life. ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t even take pictures of my fabulous eight-year-old! How can I possibly enter a world where 12-year-olds rule and Hannah Montana’s sunglasses are on my newsfeed??

I’m writing this not to dissuade those who haven’t built pages or entered the frightening world of virtual sharing. But, rather to allow you to use me as the bar in order to pave your way. I am going to keep you updated on my progress – the challenges, disappointments and adventures I will have attempting to ‘build’ an online social network.

It should be entertaining in the very least.

Oh, and if you want to join either of my networks, feel free. I’m looking for friends.
